Protection & Promotion
of the traditional variety Chontrolia
of the Municipality of Agios Vasileios
Scope
The aim of the project is to save the olive groves of Chontrolia in the wider area of the Municipality of Agios Vasileiou. These olive groves, which have been in decline in recent years and have been further affected by recent fires, are at risk of abandonment, depreciation and replacement by what are wrongly considered more productive varieties.
*The project is part of the Rural Development Programme: “Support for the implementation of actions of local development strategies by local community initiative (CLLD/LEADER)”.
Deliverables
- Raising awareness and Education: The proposed project aims to inform producers and residents of the municipality about the value of the traditional variety of ‘Chondrolia’. It is a historical variety —the oldest in the Eastern Mediterranean— which, with proper cultivation, can be as productive as or even more productive than the modern prevailing varieties.
- Creating added value: Recognising the commercial value that a product such as edible olives or olive oil can have, which stands out from the vast majority and can incorporate claims such as “oldest variety” and “century-old trees”, the project aims to inform not only the local community, but also the public at regional, national and European level. Through a strategically planned campaign, the foundations will be laid for the gradual emergence of a strong brand name for Chondrolia and the region.
